[RESOLVED] Programmer vs webBuildingApplication

Helo everybody!

Why would someone bother to learn how to code in JavaScript, in addition to HTML & CSS, to build websites while it is thought that a program – like FrontPage or FlashSomething – could do the job?
Are there any advantages of a programmer’s/coder’s work over such programs/applications in building websides? What they are, if any?

@polorboyMar 26.2007 — Essentially anyone who builds a web site is a programmer of sorts. All a web site is is a bunch of code, in a particular language, that accomplishes a task, such as displaying a web page in a certain way. All the stuff you hear about Flash, Dreamweaver, Frontpage, they are all tools used to make varrying kinds of web pages, among other kinds of programs. You can use flash to make a full desktop application if you wanted to, or make a movie to run on a disk when someone puts it in their disk drive. Languages like Javascript (not to be confused with Java, they are not even related languages), PHP, Cold Fusion, etc, are just different languages that can be used in a web page design to help make the page more user friendly and dynamic.

You still need to know how to code in the languages that those programs (tools) use in order to make a effective web page using them. Take Flash for example, you can make a really simple web site movie in it using the basic drawing tools but to make the flash movie interactive and usable you have to know how to code in Action Script, you then need to know the code to put that flash movie into a html page. You can use the WYSIWYG part of Dreamweaver or Frontpage but you are not going to get a good page from it. They add extra, sloppy code that will make a page take a long time to load compared to if you code it yourself. That and it isn't like it is really difficult to learn how to code in html, it is really intuitive and has a extremely low learning curve to get it.
