Edit Box-Simple Idea, Confusing to solve

I need help from anyone that can figure this out. It seems like it should be easy to do, but for some reason I can’t figure out how to do it.

I know a guy that wants me to do this to his website, basically he has a simple web page, and has content on one of the pages that he wants to be able to edit easier than having to open it up in Word and edit it then upload it to the web server (his web designer told him to do it this way, I know word is the noobish way to do it )

Anyway, my idea was to take the page and make him be able to click like “Admin Login” somewhere on the page, and it would take him to the same page, but without the content, ther would be a textbox, where he could type in all the information he wants on the page then press Submit, and it would output that into HTML on his webpage in the same location…I would prefer for it to be a passworded access into the edit box, but it doesn’t need to be.

Basically it would be a very easy forum, because in forums we type stuff into the box and it outputs it onto the page we were visiting. That’s what I want with this.

I’m sure it’s an easy solution, but I have no knowledge in PHP or JavaScript really, like I can’t write it myself I can just do minor edits to it, and I can read it fairly well because I took a Java class last year.

Any ideas?? I appreciate the help.

@paradoxperfectFeb 24.2007 — Actually what you're looking to do is some sort of Content Management System (CMS). Google that and you should come up with many results. And I'd advise learning PHP to help you get started. But as for designing your own, it'd be a VERY big step, especially if you don't even know any PHP at all. Good luck!

@bokehFeb 24.2007 — I'm sure it's an easy solution, but I have no knowledge in PHP or JavaScript really
Everything is easy when someone else is doing it! To build such an application properly would require an extremely broad knowledge base plus at least a month's work by an extremely experience programmer; and that's probably a gross under estimate.

@VertauthorFeb 24.2007 — Well that kinda stinks, I actually did figure it wouldn't be too difficult because it would just be an edit box to add in like maybe 5 lines of text to the page, nothing major....I guess I was wrong :-/

I guess some things that look simple on the surface are a lot more difficult than I expected.

I appreciate everyone's help, do you guys have any other solutions that would be easier than this? I wouldn't have come here but I've probably spent 8 hours researching this, and just ended up falling back to asking for help ?

Basically I will settle with something that is easier than having to save the page to the computer, going into Word to edit the page, then saving it and opening up an FTP program to upload it, I was hoping to eliminate a few steps.

@bokehFeb 24.2007 — What are you thinking editing a webpage in Word?

@VertauthorFeb 24.2007 — I'm not doing that. The person I was going to do this for, I've never done any work for him, but he has a web designer that did his website and everything and they told him to use word to edit the page.

I've never edited a page in word, I use dreamweaver or notepad usually...depending on if I want to focus on code or not.

@NightShift58Feb 25.2007 — Move away from the idea of using a simple <textarea> (text box) to edit an HTML page. It's without doubt the easiest way to "break" a page. And beyond that, there would be still a few major issues to contend with...

Also, I think Bokeh is grossly out of line with his estimate. Ah, youth...

Someone with much more knowledge than I shall ever possess could easily do it in 29 days. In a crunch, 28 days. Max...

Haha, I think at a push 27 days is fine, but only after a HIGH intake of caffeine.

Night Shift, I think there are only a few of us common people over 20 on this forum any more. It scares me that kids just out of nappies are on here abusing us.

As with the problem. A CMS is what you want, there are free ones around;

@VertauthorFeb 25.2007 — This is true, people are getting in at a younger age these days, I myself am 17 years old working part-time as a web designer. The internet does amazing things.

By the way thanks a lot sheldon, links are what I was looking for, I'll see what I can make out of those resources...I appreciate it.

@bokehFeb 25.2007 — NightShift provided a link a couple of weeks ago to two good "html editors" that work from the browser but I can't find the thread now.
