Input data as a variable

Hi,

I am using this code to get the number from this URL.

[code=php]$number = (int) basename(‘http://www.example.com/uploads/1.png’); [/code]

However, if I try to input this URL as a variable then it does not work.

I have tried:

[code=php]$number = (int) basename(‘$url’); [/code]

but that does not seem to work.

Does anyone know how I would make this work?
