Using Objects to Mimic Frames…

Hello everyone,

I’m doing a webpage for computer science class and I’m not allowed to use frames. But…I like frames especially with navigation bars and the idea of not having to rewrite the links on every page. So, I did it using object tags to mimic frames…

In essence, I have a “main” object and a “bar” object. The “bar” is a nav bar on the left, while the “main” is the main page content on the right. The “bar” object has links to other pages, which each have there own “bar” object and “main” object. All links have target “_top.” I thought this would open up the new pages with “bar” on left and “main” on right…and this works perfectly in FF and other Gecko-based browsers. However, IE doesn’t like it for some reason, and opens the new “bar” and “main” all inside the old “bar”…meaning the old “main” is sitting there with the new “bar” and “main.”

Not sure why this happens, and would highly appreciate advice on how to fix this. (I want it to appear in IE as it does in FF.)

My description is fuzzy at best, but it should be clear if you look at my site http://wpi.edu/~sli under both IE and FF. Just click on one of the links on the left.

Thanks,

sphoenixee

I use php includes for that - but you could use SSI equally well.

@sphoenixeeauthorDec 28.2006 — Thanks, kiwibrit. I'll try that if I can't get the objects idea fixed, but I hope/think there's something simple that I'm missing with the objects and it can get fixed easily (i.e. don't want to do a dramatic recode of the site unless I have to ? )...but pHp doesn't sound too bad.
