Communication between windows

I’m just starting to learn how to communicate between different windows. I use var popup=window.open(…); and then manipulate the new window by calling popup.function();…

My question is… from within the popup, how can I manipulate the parent window? For e.g. I use this to change the popup’s background color:
popup.document.body.style.backgroundColor=newColor;
How can I do that the other way around?

Also, how can I call a function located on the main page, from the popup?

@KravvitzNov 19.2006 — You want the window.opener property.
