What to learn next.

For the last few years, I’ve been making websites, using basic html.
They have turned out well and been very successful. Some have been overly successful, inasmuch as the server had to close the sites down for periods of time, since I was messing up their bandwidth.
I am capable in frames and forms.
However, I feel I should now be learning and applying more to the sites I make. I fully understand that there are now tons more languages etc. than when I started.
What do you suggest I learn as a next step up from my basic html?
I am a pensioner, so cannot afford to pay for educational tools/books etc., but wondered if anyone could suggest my next step and if there are any realiable learning sites on the net?
I would appreciate your thoughts and what each might offer me and/or why I should consider it.
Many thanks
Lizzie

@JonaOct 10.2006 — [font=trebuchet ms]Hi Lizzie,

Fortunately, if you can afford Internet, there is less of a need for physical reading material such as books. You can find information on just about anything you want to learn, so don’t limit your opportunities to what appears to be inexpensive at first glance.

When you say “basic HTML,” what exactly are you referring to? A lot of people say they know HTML, when in fact they don’t, and this is a common misconception. The ability to write HTML code and develop a site that is compliant with code standards and accessibility guidelines isn’t nearly as easy as simply applying various HTML codes that you copied from some little tutorial site that you found on Google. If by “basic HTML,” you are saying you built sites using exclusively HTML (and I am lead to believe this is the case, since you mentioned you are “capable in frames” and since frames are deprecated and obsolete), then I would suggest the next thing you learn is CSS. This is the future of web design in essence, it is the source of beauty in the new millenium. Here are some links to get you started learning to design with CSS.
