New Developer

Hi All

I am a new developer and am a bit confused as to where I should be heading.

Could someone help me, I need to know what languages and technologies should I learn to progress.

IE vbscript or javascript – php or asp or .net

I’m really confused as I can’t learn everything and don’t know which is the best route to go as employers all require different skills. Which is my best bet.

To make things worse there is dhtml xml etc.

I already know html fairly well, I can understand most of it but cannot as yet purely programme in html, I use Dreamweaver MX.

Would appreciate any help.

@Robert_WellockJun 05.2003 — Progress onto XHTML when you understand HTML 4.01 fairly well.

It actually depends upon what you want to achieve with regards to which scripting languages you then choose.

@havikJun 06.2003 — I think the more web apps you learn the better overall web developer you become. So if you get the chance to learn xml, php, javascript, vbscript, css, etc... go for it. ?

Well you're going to want HTML and some JavaScript no matter what.

As far as server-side scripting goes the first two you mentioned (PHP and ASP) are simpler than ASP.NET.

ASP is a natural if you're putting Access databases on the Web because ASP and Access both work well with Windows servers.

PHP is a natural if you're putting MySQL databases on the Web because PHP and MySQL work well with non-Windows servers (although MySQL can work on Windows servers too).

@VB_NETJun 06.2003 — Here's what I can tell you

Javascript - a must for any developer

ASP and PHP are both nice scripting languages. Most experienced developers know both. If you're more of a Windows guy, you might want to learn ASP. Note, ASP only works under Windows servers (unless you want to pay for expensive third party servers), whereas PHP works under UNIX and Windows. If you learn ASP, you will want to know VBScript. You CAN write ASP in Javascript, but VBScript is the native language of ASP.

PHP in my opinion is more difficult to learn than ASP. But, it's very nice. As far as .NET, you shouldn't have problem learning it after mastering VBScript/ASP.
