Can I run an .exe program in HTML without "downloading" it? Any advice please…

Dear WebDeveloper.com members,

Before I continue I want to first greet everyone a pleasant day!

Well, I am currently having a problem in my project…I goes like this: I’d created a program in Visual Basic and made it an executable file (.exe), then I tried to have it link in my HTML (the text is RUN ME ), now the problem is when I test the webpage, and clicked on the link, it was executed as like I will download it, when I mean to run it as an exe program. I guess this is the standard execution of such exe program on the Internet/HTML, but is there a way I could do it as make it run as exe, rather than “downloading it”? Maybe everyone would ask, “why on earth you want HTML to run an exe program…?

well, here’s “another” problem…

The one I’d mention before (the exe) in Visual Basic 6 (please forgive me dear Administrator/s if I’d mention an out of topic, I just want to elaborate the situation  ), is actually a form with a WebBrowser Control that opens an ftp server. Of course, in a usual sense, when I type in the ftp address on IE, example…ftp://ftp.ourftpserver.com/, and tried to close it by clicking the X button on top, the IE closes (of course)…BUT (a big BUT!) my boss want me to have it something like asking the user “ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO EXIT?” before closing it totally. Well, I cannot think of a better idea than implementing Visual Basic using a form (with a WebBrowser Control) and on its function Form_Unload is where I put the question “ARE YOU SURE…?”

When I run the program, it works very fine, but I don’t have an idea that when I implement it in HTML, and run it…it will serve as a “download link” instead of “execute link.”

I hope I’d said all info that might help you decide what best action I should do, I’d also tried executing it in a Flash, but the fscommand, works only if Flash was publish in .exe, but it won’t worked in swf file (I guess HTML cannot attached a Flash exe (Projector) am I right? I tried it but I only see a square on the HTML output. Please correct me if I’m wrong…)

Thank you for taking time reading this thread and God bless you all!

Warm regards,

@TiGGiMay 08.2006 — in order to RUN a exe it has to be downloaded. you can't run something that you don't have!

@the_treeMay 08.2006 — Many servers (probably not yours) are ready to run executables as a super fast alternative to scripting.

It sounds like you want to control your users browsers way too much, they don't like that.

@felgallMay 08.2006 — Web browsers are specifically set up to NOT run programs directly when linked from the server without first obtaining the permission of the person using the browser. Most people will answer NO to such requests in order to ensure that they are not installing viruses onto their computer.

@marksquallauthorMay 09.2006 — Dear Sir Stephen (a.k.a. felgall), the tree, TiGGi,

How are you guys? Hope you're all in good health. Anyway, I want to say thank you for the information you've given me, I'm truly enlighten. I guess I could show my boss this discussion so I could "prove" that the "Do you want to download" DialogBox is a fixed function in HTML to run executable programs. Well, I just mentioned that the user of our site should simply click RUN rather than clicking SAVE on the DialogBox.

I hope to hear more from you again guys...

Respectfully Yours,

@Robert_WellockMay 12.2006 — It a security risk and nobody sensibly would allow such activity unless they were 100% sure.

@felgallMay 12.2006 — General instructions from all security experts is to ALWAYS click SAVE and never click RUN. Then an antivirus and antispyware scan should be run against the file before running the program just to make sure it is clean. Just because the file you load to the web is clean doesn't mean that it can't get a virus in it before or after someone downloads it. Running executables direct from the web almost guarantees that you will eventually be hit with a virus.

@marksquallauthorMay 24.2006 — Hello Robert Wellock and Mr. Stephen,

A pleasant day;again thank you for the knowledge you shared with me. Well, I'm happy to say that we had changed that strategy and never applied what I'd asked here, as I explained the thoughts mentioned here...they were finally convinced, I guess. ?

God bless everyone.

Warm regards,

@samplistAug 27.2014 — Found this thread searching for the same thing and since i've found the answer i thought i should share.

You'll need to install a third party software called WebRun in order to run an .exe program in HTML without downloading it.

Then you create href links that contain the path to the executable you want to run.
