How to check whether the attached file is exist or not?

Hi all,
I have ‘compose mail’ page in that user can attach and send document to the recipient, I dont know how to check that user attached file is exist in client machine? I think we cannot access the client machine file system(may possible with applet using the signer)through java script.
Please tell me how to validate for &ltinput type=”file” &gt tag?
