Checking if given element exists on the page

How can I check if given element exists on the page ? For example:

[COLOR=Blue]if (document.form1.I_ELEMENT_1.checked != true) {
alert(“The checkbox Sample must be checked. “)
document.form1.I_ELEMENT_1.focus()
return false }[/COLOR]

If the form1.I_ELEMENT_1 doesn’t exists I get an error. How do I check beforehand if it exists ? Thanks.
