JS Submit form via function ignores required

I have this code, when I submit the form via a submit button it works as expected. I.E the firstname field must be filled out.

When I submit it via a button click. It does not check if it’s filled in and just submits

<input type=”text” name=”firstname” placeholder=”First Name”  required>

document.getElementById(“myButton”).addEventListener(“click”, function(){
    document.getElementById(“my-form”).submit();
})
