convert to UTF16

hi,
I am integrating with one of the system which it needs to convert all the string to UTF16.
for php is there a way? what i found is utf8_encode, but there arent any utf16

@welshMar 17.2006 — dont know if this helps, but this: http://ca3.php.net/manual/en/function.pdf-utf8-to-utf16.php

refers to utf8 to utf16, so you could convert it to utf8 then at the same time convert to utf16.
