Does r refer to enter??

I had some problems about this r and n while reading text from a file.
let me explain my problem.I have 2 files which has the same text format.When I use n while reading from those files,just one of them works.And when I use r,the other one works.But why I am confused is the format of the text files are exactly the same.If u can tell what exactly r refers to,I may figure out something…

@bokehMar 06.2006 — r is a carrage return and n is a line feed. Windows normally uses rn while *nix uses n. If you read the file into an array with [I]file()[/I] and then use [I]trim()[/I] on each line those characters will be removed.
