Meta tags….

Just a quick question concerning meta tags…

Ive just built my first site and am now going to start the process of trying to get it seen.
for the past few days i have been reading up and trawling the internet about the use of meta tags…
From what i have read i get the impression that they aren’t really that important any more, (well not as important as they used to be)..
So i am starting to think that putting in a few key words from each individual page would be best..

BUT…when i have done a quick view-source on a few top site (which rate high) i see they are using rows of them..and even one site i have looked at states that meta tags are dead but when i look at the coding i see thay have over 50 words!!. ?

Its obvious to me now that site quality, content, validation and links to and from are probably more important than anything else but as you can appreciate having a new site i need to use all avenues to get it seen..

So, would you advise using streams of descriptive words or just a few..
And does anyone really know how a search engine treats the meta, or do people just assume that they aren,t really used anymore.. ?

Any input would be much appreciated..

@johnevaMar 04.2006 — Meta tags are not as important as they use to be but they are still important and slowly becoming more important again.

Keywords are still very important in MSN search engines though and some of the other small search engines.

Make sure you at least have a description and the keywords meta tag.

You should not have to many keywords in your meta tag or you will be penalized for it.

Also make sure the keywords you use in the meta tags are use a lot in the page and are used in the title, Description and header where possiable as this adds more weight to the keywords. Also it is good to have your keywords in your anchor tags when possiable.

Go though and try and use all the methods in that.

Most important thing at the min is good relavnt content and lots of good relevant backlinks to your site.

I think i will concerntracte on relevance to the page and quality more than banging in loads of words..

Don't try to optimize for more than two to three keywords per page.
