Can I create a forum on my homepage?

I think what I’m asking is – what programming language should I learn in order to build a forum where members of my site can post messages back and forth to one another?

I don’t want to use one of the free forum resources out there, because with those you have to go to another site. I want this to be smack on our home page.

I have a “dummy” set up at http://www.yourprowriter.com/friends.htm.

I’m very new at web design and only know how to do “raw” coding, pretty basic XHTML stuff & CSS. I don’t use Dreamweaver or anything fancy.

Any advice on how to meet this goal?

Thanks, Rebecca

@TheBearMayFeb 27.2006 — First question you need to ask is what can run on my server?

#1 You need a database.

#2 You need a server side language (PHP, ASP, Java)

After you answer that, there are several free packages that can run on your site (simple search will turn up at least a half a dozen) or if you're really adventurous you can write your own.

@anejohFeb 27.2006 — Yes, like TheBearMay said, there are many that can be installed right in your site's directory and can be used as your homepage. If you do not want to install a complex forum, there are some guestbook scripts that can do something like what you have on your dummy page. Just do a search for guessbooks or simple message boards and you will find a bunch of useful codes that you can copy and paste into your code.

@JPnycFeb 27.2006 — It would likely take several months of intense study to learn enough scripting to write even a primitive message board. Just download one of the free ones. Even setting 1 of those up will be challenging enough.
