need help brain dead noob here

Hi I am having what i think is a simple table problem but i cannot figure it out. I have been looking at the page for an hour now and i just cannot see what is wrong with the code.

I did create part of the page by itself and then pasted the code into the middle of existing code form my other pages to make the page complete.

Can someone pleaes look at it and tell me what it might be. Maybe the TD COLSPAN but i am not sure.

@johnevaFeb 24.2006 — Why is that some noobs even try doing websites this way.

My first site was a basic colour background set out using tables, with some images here and there, some music embeded and some text all really easy.

Instead of trying to have lots of images used for the whole page.

Right really you should not use tables, for layout anyways CSS should be used for layout.

Another thing learning how to use a CSS file also cuts down on the amount of coding for the page.

You should lose most of the location for the images for them image tags as you only need a full URL like that if they are on another server.

Run it though a validator too.

If you really have to use a table for layout at least leave the border on just till your happy with the layout.

As doing this means you can see where it is going wrong easyer.

@WickedSharkauthorFeb 24.2006 — If i take away the full location as you suggest for the image tags the images do not appear. This page is not in my root but the images folder is so how would not having the full location work.

Ok i made my page this way and i asked for help instead of putting me down you could just help me. Since i am in a help forum that is why i posted here. This entire site is about help and that is what i need so can someone please just help me with my original problem.

Sorry for that.

I never ment to upset you but this is quite a common problem.

Anyways as I said at the very end if you really want to use tables for latout turn on your borders for the min so we can see where it is going wrong.

@the_treeFeb 24.2006 — You don't even need to do that, just highlight cells using Firefox's webdev toolbar. It seems to me that you've over set a lot of colspans (possibly as a result of modifying a template) and as such a lot of cells are forced to be too damn huge.

[i]note: Tableless layouts are still ultimately better, although tables aren't the end of the world[/i]

that is it my cells are really big. I used Mozilla webdev and i can see where the cells are way to big. These are the cells that use colspan to. How can i fix it and yes this was originally a template that i have modified heavily.

@the_treeFeb 24.2006 — Well reducing the colspan until it works is probably your best bet. Work systematically, top-to-bottom and you'll get things done a lot quicker.

I have been trying to adjust old code and i am not getting much luck in it. i am guessing i make the numbers smaller right?

How come i just cannot remove the colspan code from the tags? I tried but it did not work. It still left the cells really big.

I have other working pages that have this same code in it except for the middle part of the code and those pages work fine. I need this page to match my other pages and i have several and it is integrated into another system that helps automate my website and it uses .tpl files for some of the pages and the other pages i am using standard .html pages.

If i make my own table from scratch will i have issues making it match the other pages i have with the other code on it?

This might be getting complicated now.

@johnevaFeb 24.2006 — Yeah I get ya I have never used any template files other than Dreamweaver template files I have made myself so I am not sure about just what to do here dude.

But if you are altering the page anyways wont that effect the way your template file is being used anyways?

The first row adds upto 7 cells

The second row adds upto 10 cells

The third row only adds upto 3 cells

The forth row only adds upto 1 cell

I gave up at this point cos it was just a waste of time even looking at it.

You need each row adding upto the same amount of cells.

You also had extra tags that should not have been their too.

As I say the only thing I can suggest it to start over cos that is well messed up.

It also means you can rethink using tables for layout.

@WickedSharkauthorFeb 24.2006 — I have Dreamweaver 8 at home. Should i just use this to do this page. All of images that i use cam from two different .psd files i made. Well one i made and the other was a template that i modded to get what i wanted. I can use Dreamweaver to make the code and see if it comes out better.

If you got to my main page it works fine. It only gets messed up when i add the extra content that i want in the one page. All of the rest of my pages are completely funcitonal.
