Unicode display inside <textarea>

Is there a way to display special character symbols (Unicode?) within a textarea?

I want to be able to display the greek symbols for PI, GAMMA, RHO, etc. within a read only <textarea> box.

Bonus question: Can I copy and paste a section from a MS Word file that contains the special symbols I want and display them correctly within a text input or textarea box? Or even within the body of the web page?

Finally, is this a job that CSS or Javascript would better be able to handle?
