Setting up own website

Hi,

I’m just starting a photography business and have got the basic website up and running, but am incredibly stuck on the gallery page.

I was using a free piece of software which was Flash based, which was perfect for what I originally wanted, but now I want to go REALLY sophisticated.

This is basically what I want but I don’t know how to do it (I apologise if these don’t make sense, but I’m not technical at all):

1, Have my gallery pages populated from a database. I.e. when someone clicks to a gallery it will open up a page which will refer to a database that tells the page which photo to show, which photo to show next, what price the photo is and which product is sat behind the Buy Button. I already have the code for the Buy Button and it links to Mal’s E Commerce, where I have an account.

2, Have a page which I can tell my clients to go to, where they will see the proofs of the photos I have taken, and they can choose which ones they want. Perhaps this can be in the form of a form for ease?

If you are wondering why I am not just hiring someone to do this for me, then its because I’ve just come out of uni and I hardly have any money.

Thanks

@JPnycFeb 19.2006 — I don't know how you're going to do this without hiring someone. That's a far amount of work you're talking about, and it's neither simple nor quick.

@MstrBobFeb 19.2006 — Well, if you're not going to be able to hire somebody, then you've got two choices:

1) Take the long (but rewarding) road of learning server-side programming and do it yourself. Unfortunately this will take you a while.

2) Find software that already does this (I'm assuming you'll want some Free software since you are apparently tight on funds). There's nothing wrong with this, but you are undoubtedly going to have to tweak it to your needs.

@JPnycFeb 19.2006 — Number 2 is a good idea Bob, but I don't know of any. Do you? That's why I said what I did. Of course if anyone knows of any, please post them, but I did a search on google and didn't find anything.

@MstrBobFeb 19.2006 — I think he's looking for a Gallery system, no? There are many:

or

http://www.giffin.org/phpgallery.php

Either way, some tweaking will probably be neccessary.

@JPnycFeb 19.2006 — He's talking about a database that stores images, and I dunno any that use one. Looks like the 2nd one you listed does that. Not sure if it does everything else he mentioned though.

@MstrBobFeb 19.2006 — Well, first off, I would not recommend storing the photos themselves in the Database. That's not usually how it's done. I've always seen it as having a Folder, and the database stores information on the image and it's location. These system provide for a description of each image (So he can include the price and link to buy in that).

@JPnycFeb 19.2006 — Well he's looking for full info on the image, so I guess that's why the DB. But I imagine if it were accomplished another way he wouldn't mind
