@Max_PowersJun 18.2006 — The sitemap doesn't directly help with your PageRank, but it does get your pages noticed quickly. Rewriting your URLs woul dalso put you ahead of the game, but you will need special software to do this on IIS (Isapi-Rewrite)

@rudradattaauthorJul 10.2006 — hi,

you are absolutely right, it can not help to create page rank but helps crawler to get your pages easily so that your site will be visible in keywords search.

@RiannaJul 16.2006 — Since you are talking about sitemaps can anyone tell me if this is the correct way to start the google site map at the top of the site map page. If not using its generator... but just submitting the site address to google? Maybe this will help rud too since just starting with site maps.

<site

base_url="http://www.website.com/"

/>

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<urlset xmlns="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84">

<url>

<loc>http://website.com/</loc>

<priority>1.0</priority>

<changefreq>weekly</changefreq>

</url>

<url>

<loc>http://website.com/page2.html/</loc>

<priority>1.0</priority>

<changefreq>weekly</changefreq>

</url>

</urlset>

</site>

Thanks.....

@Max_PowersJul 16.2006 — The first method will certainly work correctly<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<urlset xmlns="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84">
I use a little more code that works in XML validators
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?>

<urlset xmlns="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84"

xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"

xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84

http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84/sitemap.xsd">
One thing it looks like you may have done in the last one was to mix your URLs between 'www' and 'non-www'. Google sees these as two different domains and will yell at you for your sitemap. One thing to keep track of when manually writing a sitemap file is that all of the www's are the same.

The [site][/site] tags could be removed.

@RiannaJul 16.2006 — OK, wondering why is the second one better than the top one. Also, yours works real well without the site tags? It makes me a bit nervous taking them off but if you know yours is working, I will. I'll check my urls. Thanks!
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@Max_PowersJul 16.2006 — Yes, I currently manage hundreds of sitemaps and none have the site tag. I haven't had an issue yet.

The second one uses extra code so that you can run it through an XML validator to be sure that it's formatted correctly. Google can be rather picky about dotting the i's and crossing t's and running it through a validator will point out errors or confirm that it is valid (correct).

The second one gives you no other benefit than being able to use a validator (peace of mind).

@RiannaJul 16.2006 — Hey, I just realized google validates it when you turn in your sitemap. Works great, tells you if there are errors and what they are.

Success!
