ASP, PHP, etc…. which one?

hey guys,
i’m a front-end web developer that is trying simplify my sites as my clients needs grow. currently, i employ server side includes for common components such as navigational bars, promos, banners, logos, etc. This has been great, but would i benefit from learning to utilze either ASP or PHP?

i am not looking to learn either language to the expert degree but am willing to set aside a day or so of intense research. is it possible to incorporate a handful of scripts that will assist in streamlining my sites?

if so, what resources do you reccommend using to learn what i need to know? of course, i prefer web(free) resources but am not opposed to plunking down some cash for it either.

in advance, i thank you for your time and effort,
grant

@KravvitzFeb 16.2006 — I recommend PHP for several reasons:
•
It is commonly regarded as fairly easy to learn.

  •
It has excellent online documentation, and there are many books about it as well.

  •
It continues to grow, while ASP seems to have been replaced by .Net.

  •
It runs natively on Linux but there is a Windows port available as well.

@NogDogFeb 16.2006 — If you go the PHP route, I recommend installing XAMPP on your PC so that you can work on it locally. XAMPP will install PHP, MySQL, and Apache web server for you.

@ronalfyFeb 16.2006 — In my opinion, PHP is the best language for small-scale web-based apps and websites. Even some large scale applications still use PHP. It is easy to use, learn, and php.net is a tremendously great resource. PHP also works quite well with MYSQL.

ASP.NET is what I would use if I were to use another language, seeing that I already know VB.NET and it wouldn't take much of a stretch. However, anything .NET requires you to have Visual Studio, and also to have the correct software installed on your server.

Since most servers already have PHP and MYSQL, that is the route I would take, especially since you are just trying to use it to replace SSI.

@CognitionFeb 16.2006 — The best is Ruby and Ruby on Rails

Its a programmers dream come true. My company just switched and we're already developing twice as fast and we've only been coding it for a month.

Its easier than PHP, ASP, .NET, Perl, and Python. And the best part is that is just as functional as all of those combind. Works on both Windows, and Linux, Open Source, been around for at least 10 years and the community is growing daily.

Go from Hacking to Pickax, you'll love all the facets

    Hope that helps

@drhowarddrfineFeb 16.2006 — ASP is not a language but a set of controls you can use with a language. If you commit to asp, or asp.net, then you are committing to Microsofts way of doing things, too.
However, anything .NET requires you to have Visual Studio
This is not true, though some may tell you it is easier with it than without. VS can run you hundreds of dollars depending on the version you use. (See the committing to MS part above)
The best is Ruby and Ruby on Rails Its a programmers dream come true.
We've all heard that before.
