Changing side scroll bar appears in scrollable DIV

Hi,

I have a div with overflow set to auto. The scroll bar that appears always appears on the right hand side of the div. How can I change the scroll bar to the left hand side?

Thanks,

Tim.

@ErolinDesignsFeb 09.2006 — You would have to do the following:

Set HTML to write from right to left;
<HTML dir="rtl">
Then set EACH div to write from left to right;
<DIV DIR="ltr">
Not very cross-browser friendly, and IMHO, very annoying. For users that are not technically savvy, they will feel lost and may not want to use your site anymore.

@ray326Feb 09.2006 — Bad UI design.

@ErolinDesignsFeb 09.2006 — Yes, I believe so too. In cases like this, where the person asking for help asks for something that is generally bad for users, should we still help them?

@timjsauthorFeb 09.2006 — (And forgive me if i misinterpret the spirit of your comments.)

A sensible question always deserve sensible answers.

  • - I may well be developing a website that requires both left to right and right to left languages and as such requires the type of scrolling I describe above.

  • - I dont think my boss would dig me saying "Thats bad UI design" after he's been on the phone for an hour and a half trying to persuade the client that it's bad UI design.

  • - I may not be developing a site for general consumption, and may just be trying to expand my knowledge. (Why climb a mountain?)

  • - When Picasso picked up a baintbrush for the first time, do you think anyone said "Put that down. Your pencil drawings are awful"?

  • - We're all borg anyway so lets not make value judgements about a particular technology.

  • I'd like to say thanks again to the original replier, for your helpful posting!

    Tim, a noob.

All you said is "I want to put the scrollbar on the left." That's bad UI design. Why? Because almost all users expect scroll bars to be on the right of the area they control. Are you building a RTL site, Pablo?

    @timjsauthorFeb 10.2006 — Sorry to drag this off topic - but is it commonplace here to try and make OPs feel like twits? Are you trying to cause offense? I'll take my posting elsewhere if its not wanted. Any mods want to comment?

    @ErolinDesignsFeb 10.2006 — Tim, don't take this the wrong way, but most of us in the forums have been in the industry for such a long time that we know what works and what doesn't. For example, we know that ads work better near the scrollbar, banner ads are generally ignored, and black backgrounds shouldn't be used if not needed.

    Another thing is where the scrollbar is located. Many, if not, most users know that the scrollbar should be on the right hand side. Although many people do use a scroll wheel, or mouse gestures--technically inexperienced people will be thrown off by such a design. It's like putting your navigation at the footer of each page.

    I think your being a little sensitive there fella. Chill out dude.

    Ray is a top fella and helps so many people every day remember this all originated from trying to help you and give you some good advice.

    And as for theating to take your posts elsewere, have you not seen how many people use this forum?

    I dont think that the forum is desperate for more users. But yet it is nice to be able to get help from some very experianced web designers/developers.

    @ray326Feb 11.2006 — Are you trying to cause offense?
I simply told you that you were making a bad design decision. Did I need to add a dash of Humor Helper to my reference to your self-comparison to Picasso? My wife tells me I'm way too obtuse most of the time. Since you didn't post a link the conversation is wide open to confusion.
