Best SEO books?

Hello,

I am currently doing practical training in a company and was asked if I could do something to enhance the results in search engines. This gave me an excellent idea to do my college thesis about Search Engine Optimization. The idea is to learn the tips & tricks behing SEO then implement them into the company web-pages. I would measure the effectiveness simply by doing searches by a bunch of keywords before and after (I would wait 2-3 months for good results).

I have read quite a lot about the subject from the Internet, but I need some good printed source material for reference. I looked from Amazon, but couldn’t really tell which one would be a good, professional choise. I would like the book be rather new also. So what books would you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

@Compguy_PeteFeb 06.2006 — I think you maybe on the wrong track here if your looking for the "Latest and Greatest infomation"

Books in compairson to the web is old news... A book released today has infomation that could be anywhere from 6months to a years worth of old and outdated information.

Currently your best bet is for smaller print pubs like Magizines, if your truely looking for hot info you have to find it on the web. I've spent $26.00 on a single magizine in recent months and ya know what it was mightly useful... granted it was for graphic design and not for webdesign but it was far better than anything in the book section.

A great site which used to be owned by the company who owns webdeveloper is http://searchenginewatch.com/ new owner but same great info on the subject of Search engines.

Hopefully you have a book store intown I highly suggest going there than buying a book sight unseen from amazon.

Things your going to find in books are going to do a couple of things:

1. strengthen your background in this area... it's hard to know and talk about where were going if you don't know where we've been.

2. these books are always full of interesting tidbits and info that is nice to refer too.

3. It'll look great on your bookshelf!

@ManiaauthorFeb 07.2006 — Thank you Pete for a definite answer.

You're right about books not having the latest information and I'm well aware of it too. I don't even like books that much, I'm pretty much used to finding and reading everything from the Web. ? But sadly the professors don't give much credit to Web references so there has to be at least a book or two about the subject in hand.

You gave me good pointers though. I think I will try to find a book that will cover the basics of the area and things that are "solid". This will also give me the "where we've been" part. For the latest info I could reference recent articles from magazines and a few respectible hyperlinks as well.

Oh and thanks for the link you provided, I will look more into that.
