Brand new to domain registration…

Hi !!! Some of you might already know me… I’m a writer (not famous, not published, nothing… just a writer, on her own, sad and lonely… ok…), and I run my website on a free host : http://enfantsdelo.free.fr
My boyfriend stated that “enfantsdelo.free.fr” is a relatively long name, and not easy to remember if I want to advertise.
In fact, the spelling easily leads to mistakes : enfantdelo, enfantsdeleau, and so on. (I’m French, just in case you wondered. The title means : children of Ô, and the sonority is very close to that of “children of the Water”) and the free.fr is not really seomthing who might attract people to my website.
Since a few weeks, I’ve decided to do a major advertising campain (quite a laughable one, actually, like putting magnets everywhere, and giving cards with the website to everyone I meet… yeah… I’m not really in the advertising business..). So, I’d like to buy a domain name.
I read the stickies and I searched a bit through the internet. I’m still not sure where I’ll buy my domain name, but that’s not really the point.
I have a free host, and I’m not going to lose that… It’s not so often that a host is free, without ads, with server-side technology available, and up to now, no bandwith limit (anyway, I’m not the 5000 visits per day kind… it’s more 5000 visits in 3 years…). I’d like to be sure I can register a name and forward it to free.fr without paying a fee or anything. can you tell me if that’s possible ?

Next, the domain name.. At first, I was settled on enfantsdelo.com. then, I realized I would get the same problems as with enfantsdelo.free.fr… What makes a good domain name ? Of course, the name of my book would have been a good choice, but it’s too long… any idea for the maximum length of a domain name (62 characters, I know, I’m talking about the maximum acceptable, memorizable name) ? Any idea what could bring people in to read a book that is published FOR FREE on the internet ? I don’t intend to make any profit with my book, I just want readers…

Thanks for your advice !

Ness

@Ness_du_FratauthorJan 19.2006 — Coucou ! C'est vrai que ça fait un bail !!!

Je vais continuer en anglais pour que les autres ne me tuent pas... ?

Your idea is very interesting, but that's the only book I'm going to publish for free, I'm not crazy. I've written another book, I hope to publish it. And I thought of buying ness.com, but of course, it's taken, so is ness.net... yeah...

There is one domain I am thinking of buying, but I'm not going to tell it publicly... I'm still very unsure about it.

A friend suggested "leo.com", or "leo.net" (as in Les Enfants de l'Ô), but both domains are taken already, and it's not that relevant... It's hard to think of something when you have virtually no product to sell ! And of course, I could buy nessdufrat.com, but then, I'm not that narcissic (no offence to all the people who have theirname.com, ^^) and this website is about my book, not about myself or my services !

@LiLcRaZyFuZzYJan 19.2006 — j'ai pensé à livresse.com/net (mais c'est pris) (ca aurait été marant) :p

Tonight, my mum who has absolutely no idea about webdesign, web and general trend suggested : you could try fiction.com, or roman.com... I was, like, OMG... ^^; Yeah, sure mum, 10 years ago, I could certainly have bought those domain names...

She also suggest vanessadufrat.com, but it's an egocentric domain name, and that's my book I hope to attract people to, not myself... (in the same state of mind, I'm not going to put pictures of myself all over the website... ?)

Anymore suggestions ? I'm getting quite desperate... When I told my mum the one and only idea I had, she said : mmm, isn't this the name of a comic ? it sounds like the name of a character in a very famous comic...

Indeed, I think some character in a comic is named exactly like my ex-future-potential-domain name...

@DNamesJan 24.2006 — In answer to your original question about whether you can register a domain and still use your current free webhost: Yes, you can if your host allows it. All you need to do is edit the name servers. You'd find this info at your webhost.

Your boyfriend is right. Free hosting does not say much about your credibility. I wonder what is holding you back from paying for a host. It doesn't have to be expensive at all like the packages at http://www.vohio.com

I visited your current website and I think it looks really attractive. Wish I could speak French though. ?

How to come up with a good domain? Try the domain suggestion tool at http://www.DomainName-Search.com.

You enter one keyword and it comes up with various possible suggestions.

However, if you ask me, I think your mum's suggestion to register your own name is a brilliant idea. All the famous authors operate out of their self-named websites. ? People remember the author. (Look at stephenking.com & jkrowling.com, etc).

Also you don't have to worry about finding a second domain, or third domain name when you write more books. Everything goes into your main site. You can have sub-directories linked from your home page like ~ www.vanessadufrat.com/enfantsdelo and www.vanessadufrat.com/newbook, etc.

@Ness_du_FratauthorJan 25.2006 — Hi DNames !!!!

Thanks a lot for your post, I really appreciate it !

My webhost does not give me ANY information about editing the name servers or if it allows it or anything, but somebody told me is has the same host and bought is domain name... All went fine, apparently, so I think I'll give him a call and have him explain me everything.

I don't know about my own name as a domain... First, vanessadufrat.com is kinda long and narcissic... lol. And I don't plan to write other books for free. The next ones, they'll have to pay for it... But it's right that it could be good to remember the author and not only the book... Still, I think the name of the book will ring a bell in the future potential visitor, whereas he might think vanessadufrat.com is just another webdesigner's website...

Anyway, I'm not even famous... lol

For the website, I wish it was indeed attractive. As my boyfriend pointed out, the website is not attractive at all, it's cold, strange-looking, and although the code is fine and valid, and works with every common browser, it's still far from a website people would come back to.

I'm currently trying to do some mockups, but I'm not satisfied at all for the moment... All I need is a miracle... lol

I think I'm going to make a little poll among my visitors to see which domain name they prefer...

Can I PM you if I have some more questions about domain names ? You seem well into the field...

@DNamesJan 26.2006 — Sure, you can PM me.

I'm a writer too and yes, I know, one or two things about domain names. ?

My websites are at http://www.OpenForSale.com

and http://www.DNames.org, besides those mentioned in my signature link.
