document.whatever.src=value (IE Problems)

I use the following string in several places of the html:-

document.whatever.src=value (IE Problems)

whatever is a ID in a <a href command that exists.

value is a variable value we use.

When using Firefox this is handled fine. In Internet Explorer it just stops the javascript running completely!

Any ideas or comments and possible workaround/alternatives?
