input fields

The form I am creating has an entry as

name : input filed OR SSN : Inputfield

Would like to know which will be better for the user to understand that they have to enter name or SSN.

i.e when they are one below the other or one beside the other.

Also, if one of them are not entered would like to display a message beside one of them.

Is there an exmple where I can see such a form. To better decide which will be better.

Please let me know your opinion on the same too.

@ray326Jan 17.2006 — Put both fields and labels on the form, indicating one is required then check it with an onsubmit handler AND at the server.
