does anyone use Publisher to make websites?

Forgive the newbie..I’m just fooling around with making webpages and with what I have read, Frontpage is not worth the money and I’m not at the stage to spend money on Dreamweaver..yet.

I have MS Publisher 2003 on my system and have fooled around with the web page capablities. Anyone else use this?

Also, if i purchase templates on say www.templatemonster.com, once i download them will i be able to change the text and outline or do i need say Frontpage?

thanks~ ?

@ray326Dec 31.2005 — Absolutely not. If cost is a concern and you're obviously running on Windows then look at HTML-kit.

@felgallDec 31.2005 — The only web editor Microsoft produce is Frontpage. While some people consider that it produces bad HTML code any other Microsoft program produces garbage if you try to produce HTML.

There are hundreds (if not thousands) of web editors to choose from and many of them are free.

You wouldn't try to keep your beer cold using a TV - its the wrong sort of electrical appliance - you'd use a fridge. So don't try and use the wrong sort of compter program to write your web pages - use a web editor not a DTP program.

@stacylynauthorDec 31.2005 — Thanks! As I said, I'm a newbie trying to learn from sites as this and forums. I have never seen Frontpage in use thus did not know the difference. I have downloaded HTML kit and am fooling around with that!

Happy New Year! ?

@WebJoelDec 31.2005 — Sometimes, you just want a leg-up on getting a template. Something to 'get you started'... And, free is always good... so check out the free online web-page generator at this URL:

It makes DHTML pages on-demand, and granted that 9 out of every 10 look like crap, every so often you get some diamond-in-the-rough that, if you know a little bit of htm and css, you can tweak and make your own. I have made some eye-droppingly beautiful (and fully cross-browser!) web pages using this as my 'starter'...

(Sometimes you generate some quirky code, but if you know some rules, you can augment and changes these. Generally, it won't affect anyone except the afficinado...)

This is a FREE site, without any stipulations to citation or royalty or use thereof (but if you're using their code verbatum, then a citation would be called for).

And for EDITING the downloaded file, try the program "EDITPLUS2.exe". You can find this at http://www.tucows.com and do a SEARCH. It is free for 30 days I think. It is easy, FAST, reliable. I favor this as one of the top 10 programs that I have ever used! I bought my copy years ago.

Best!

@ebianJan 01.2006 — Yes, in the early years it produced basic pages and rewrote code and the included templates sucked as do the new ones. I've had my issues with it so have others with Dreamweaver and the rest. I've been using FP for eight years and it can make you a lot of money. It's where I started to learn. There is tons of support out their for frontpage including templates and advice.

Publisher means Desktop publisher NOT Website publisher

@felgallJan 01.2006 — Any web editor that generates the HTML for you is going to have issues with the code it produces. The only way to get perfect code is to learn HTML and write it yourself in a web editor that allows you to do so.
