How to save information while using <a href>

I want to save information when someone using a link, and I’m using the method:
<a href=”questionary.asp?subject=”….>

My problem is that I want the subject to be worth to the value of a variable meaning:

i=3
<a href=”questionary.asp?subject=i>

Anyone knows how to use this method? because the way I use it doesn’t work.
