Message Board question

I have a message board where it shows the board on the left and the user stats on the right. I was wondering if it was possible if when you went to write a thread the user stats would dissapear and the board would take over the entire screen or possibly the user stats be replaced with smilies.And when you go back the user stats would re appear. I figured it would prob be if/then so i posted it under javascript but I dont know where to go from there (also I have windows xp and windows xp doesnt support asp, is there a way of achieving what i asked with just javascript?)

@TheBearMayDec 14.2005 — Replacing the contents of a div, span, etc. is easy if it has an ID and only a wee bit more difficult if you don't. Same for hiding it.

document.getElementById("elementId").innerHTML="...."

document.getElementById("elementId").style.display="none"
