Metaname – How extensive do you go with it?

Hey all. I recently got a site going ( http://www.edmontongolf.com ) and like everyone am trying to get a high PR on google. My question is how much detail do I go into my metanames? Can I put too many key words or the more the merrier as long as the topic of the sight is kept in mind. Will google punish you for straying off courses slightly. For example it is a golf site in Edmonton, AB Canada. Should I just stick with Edmonton Golf as a keyword or should I go as far as putting Canadian Golf as a keyword with all the other variations in between? Thanks in advance. Much appreciated

P.S. Just want to express my appreciation to the visitors on this site. Glad to see people so willing to help. I’ve had some previous threads which were extremely helpful.

Ciao Steve

@EasyWebDec 14.2005 — First off you should do a little research on what are the popular keywords/phrases for the context of your site (look at what the top ten sites are using as keywords when you perform a search ie: Golf courses) don't just check Google do the same to a few of the major engines, once you have a list weed out the duplicates and then compare those keywords to the text contained in each of your pages marking which keywords match on each page then assign several or all of those matches to the keyword group for that page.

You may have to re-word some of the content in order to make good matches but if you want PR it's what you have to do.

Title this too is important and you should try and include your chosen title both in the keywords and the page text (you can use different titles for each page as long as you maintain overall relevance to the sites content) and don't forget what most people are likely to be using as a search phraseit is unlikely that they would use something like golf sites they are more likely to use "Golf courses" or "Golfing Canada" so if you want to be found remember this fact you can go for a niche but in all honesty not many people will find you and you'll never get the visitor numbers you desire.

Now you've had a little insight into the workings of SEO if you want it done properly PM me for a quote.

@BarnieauthorDec 14.2005 — Can you have too many keywords.. Most of hte name in here are of the different golf courses featured on the site. Will google punish you for going overboard?

@EasyWebDec 14.2005 — the answer is ambiguos really barnie yes they can but it's entirely their decision if you want to gain high PR you have to target the pages of your site as i said "research is the key most of the top site usually only have between 5 - 10 keywords or phrases per page and these are targeted to the page in this way the weight of the word count is increased and this in turn lifts the importance of the page.

Too many people SEO included make the mistake of over loading their Keywords on the pages having keywords with out corresponding matches in the body of the document causes an adverse score ie: if i place 10 words in the keywords but only 2 of those keywords match words in the body of text on the page the score would be +2 -8 however if 7 of the words match the score would then be +7 -3 the whole point is Targeting and without it you stand little to no chance of a decent PR
