How do I get google to list my site’s title in it’s listing?

Okay, I’ve put my website on the net and have put in meta-tags, to boot. All the search engines picked up my site except for google, which is understandable since google is more influenced by pagerank.

But, what I can’t understand is why a certain page of mine shows up with a title that matches my title tags and a description. This certain page I’ve made is just a template I’ve displayed in the “my work” section of my website.

Why is it showing up with a title and everything, while the rest of my site only gets:

thehiddengrotto.com
Similar pages

Check for yourself. Just type in “thehiddengrotto” in the search.

Oh, and here’s a link of the page that gets the royal treatment: http://thehiddengrotto.com/new
I put this page up within the last few weeks too. What’s even weirder is that it’s two links away from the homepage and navigation section (which i’m guessing would make it harder for the crawlers).

@FangDec 11.2005 — Look at the download time for the homepage; that says it all.

Edit: Just thought I'd add, BMP's??? Ouch, if you want lossless use PNG, but for bigger pictures with lots of colours, use JPG.

@urquanmasterauthorDec 12.2005 — Fang. Thanks for the link! You know how long I've been looking for something like this?

Anyways, I finally converted everything to jpg. Would slow download time really contribute to google not putting my site's title on it's listings?

@EasyWebDec 12.2005 — actually whats mainly stopping google from indexing your site properly is this little piece of text "Website almost done" you see Googlebot is reading that as "Under Construction" so therefore into the sandbox you go (I've checked and you are sand bound) Google and most search engine indexers are set to look for phrases such as yours and place the site to the back of the indexer que as there's no point indexing a site that is likely to change dramatically at any given time and saying your websites almost done is like holding up a red stop sign and saying wait until i've finished.

if you want your site included in the next dance of google then get rid of this piece of text and replace it with something more like "I've now added ****" The indexer will read this and go looking for your added information in all it will speed the whole caching process up for you.

@urquanmasterauthorDec 12.2005 — Your might be right. Google may have seen that and didn't index the rest of the site. Thanks for the suggestion. I've since changed it.

@nile1483Dec 15.2005 — Probably one of the most important things to have when starting a new site is a high search engine ranking. With most sites, search engines can account for up to 95% of traffic. If you're not placed in the first three pages, it's unlikely you'll get any traffic from a search engine. Google is one of the fastest growing search engines; a high listing here will guarantee you traffic. Google's results are also used by Yahoo when it's finished displaying its own results. To get a high ranking in google you need to design your pages and promotional methods around it. First let's look at how google rates pages, obviously their exact ranking system is secret but the following gives a fair idea:

  • 1. Google works using Page Rank. This is a system that allocates a page a score depending on its importance. This is calculated by looking at all the pages that link to it and how important they are. The more pages that link, the higher the score. The greater the rank of the page pointing to your site, the more it contributes to your page's rank. To quote some of the original google researchers: "For most popular subjects, a simple text matching search that is restricted to web page titles performs admirably when Page Rank prioritizes the results". This is important. This tells us that the two most important things to ranking in google are the page's Page Rank and it's Title!

  • 2. If a page links to your page (which point 1 tells you is a requirement to any reasonable ranking), then the text of the link to your page counts towards your ranking!

  • 3. Google makes extensive use of "Proximity". This means google looks at pages and can tell how close key words are together. So if the searcher enters "antique spectacles", then the text "antique spectacles" in your document would help slightly more than "antiques and spectacles" and much more than "antique items, which include many things such as spectacles". There are ten levels of proximity that words can have.

  • 4. Google looks at visual presentation such as: size of text to the rest of the document and boldness of text.

  • 5. Each keyword is looked at and ranked: Title, anchor, URL, text in a large font, text in a small font. Each applying a different weighting.

  • 6. Each of the factors above is calculated in with different ratings. The format of your page has a large effect to start off with but quickly tapers off so a finite limit is reached (i.e. you cannot just fill your page with hundreds and hundreds of copies of perfectly formatted text). This implies that the rule of each keyword applying 3 to 7 times in each 100 words should probably be okay.

  • So your approach to getting a good ranking on google should be to design and submit your page as follows.

  • 1. Pick your keywords.

  • 2. Ensure your keywords are included in the Title of the document; they MUST be placed next to each other for a good ranking. If this isn't the home

page (i.e. index.html etc) then name it after your keywords. i.e. keywords-here.html. If your domain name includes the keywords then all the

    better.

  • 3. Repeat the keywords near the top of your page using header tags or at least a large font. Again, make sure they are as close together as possible. ("Antique Spectacles" is better than "Antiques and Spectacles")

  • 4. Design your site with as many pages as possible. Page size doesn't matter but remember that the effect of keywords tapers off so it's probably best to make 300 a maximum. Try to repeat each keyword 3 to 7 times for every hundred words.

  • 5. Keywords should be repeated throughout the whole site, not just the page. Use links back to the home page with the keywords in if possible.

  • 6. Ask as many sites as possible to link to you. Get them to use your keywords in the link text.Forget about Free For All Links or Link Farms, Google considers them spamming and may penalise your site. Do a search for similar sites on google and start trying to get links on the sites that are shown, in all probability they have the high PageRank score that'll help you most. You want LOTS of links.

  • 7. Submit. Also submit to Yahoo, yahoo has a very high PageRank (if you can get on!!).

  • Good Luck!

@EasyWebDec 15.2005 — I couldn't have put it better myself what nile1483 says is absolutely correct and the results you get will rely on how well you understand his instruction i would however like to add that you should also consider adding your site to Alexa.com as they too play a large part in your site gaining and maintaining a good PR.

Dmoz has now become too bloated with red tape to be of any real use in gaining PR as it can take up to 2 years just to get listed and in some cases listing just does not occurr as by the time they have got around to your site they have either lost the listing or you have moved on and renamed re-located your site.

I find though that the biggest mistake most site owners make is concentrating on Google as the be all and end all of search engines, There are lots of others out there and some have reasonably high PR my thoughts are that you should try and reach a medium with your SEO that enables you to rank well on these other engines too.

I have known several sites that while they obtained page rank were well down the list when it came to search results having a high PR does not automatically place you on top of the serps and it is your serp placement that will bring traffic to your door after all whats the good of being a 10/10 if your stuck in siberia with a serp of 35,000 nobodies going to spend hours searching through page after page of results to find you on the same token i have known sites that don't register a PR yet they are listed at #1 on the serps.

Now why did i suggest Alexa to you well it's a little know fact that Google take particular notice of Alexa's rating of your site and while this won't affect your PR greatly it does affect where they place you in the serps so if alexa rate you as the 500,000th most important site your not going to get near the top of the serps depending on how many other sites are recorded for a particular search term.

You could find yourself close to the back of the results list, Building your Alexa rank means quite a lot of work but in the long run i firmly beleive that your site will benefit not just on Google but most of the other search engines as well as they too turn to Alexa as an important information source about a particular site.

    @jerry_williamsApr 06.2009 — Hi friend,

.Below are list building techniques that have been tried and tested.

    Use the Autoresponder

Autoresponders are software programs that are used to send messages to a big number of clients. They automatically send out replies to messages received and are a good way of managing one’s contacts. Autoresponders save one plenty of time that could otherwise be used to read and reply to messages. They are also used to manage subscription by potential clients. They also forward subscription requests to visitors who are not registered on your regular posts.
