IE/Z-index Problems

I’m having a problem regarding IE and the z-index property. I have a drop down menu and a javascript applet positioned absolutely on a page. The z-index of the drop down menu is set higher than that of the div containing the applet. Yet, in IE, the drop down menu still displays behind the applet.

I’ve searched and searched the web, but it appears that this is indeed a bug, and there is no known workaround. Please tell me otherwise. ?

@FangDec 09.2005 — The select element is a special window in IE. The only way to solve the problem is to place the select in an iframe or hide it on menu mouseover.

@RezonauthorDec 09.2005 — Here's the link that describes the bug. We're thinking of creating new id's for each dropdown menu and absolutely positioning each one below their specific menu items. : Ugly, but it might work.

@RezonauthorDec 09.2005 — This is talking about v5, is this the way v6 handles it also? I can't put my drop down into an iFrame and keep the design.

@FangDec 09.2005 — Yes. afaik iframes and hiding are the only solutions.
