ModalDialog test (please!)

Hi Everyone…

There was a post earlier today regarding the use of ModalDialog boxes.

And I was thinking that maybe I could get some feedback from a cross-section of users as to the cross-browser compatability and functionality of such a thing.

I have a file which launches a ModalDialog here:

http://www.1dot0.com/khaki/modalDialog.htm

I would appreciate if you could go to that page and …

1) Click the link (“Launch ModalDialogBox”)…

2) Click the color names in the ModalDialog box…

3) Close the ModalDialog box…

4) Click the link again (“Launch ModalDialogBox”)

5) Respond to me here with…

a) The browser that you tested it on…

b) Whether you were able to get the ModalDialog box to launch a 2nd time…

c) The general speed of the page loads (all of them).

I would really appreciate this ?

(by the way… I already know that N7 will not re-launch the ModalDialog a 2nd time without re-loading the page…. but I’m really curious as to how other browsers and versions interact with this)

Thank you ! ? !

@AdamGundryApr 30.2003 — Hi khaki

I'm testing on Mozilla 1.3 and ADSL. The first page loaded quickly and the modal dialog opened fairly quickly, but loading the colours took a long time and the link didn't react as normal (i.e. no focus or hand pointer). I couldn't open the window a second time without reloading.

Adam ?

@khakiauthorApr 30.2003 — Thanks Adam...

yeah... the links are not "nomal" and i didn't go through the process of styling with hands and whatnot (just threw some lazy underlines on them to make it apparent that they are probably links).

I think that Mozilla and Netsape need to re-load in order to launch the MDbox again.

Opera6.02 launches it again and again and again (etc).

So cyberade...

did the "color" pages load slow for you too?

(they do for me... which is an unfortunate side-effect of <iframe> loading, i guess ? ).

Thanks for your help guys! ?

ANYONE ELSE?

it only takes a sec ? and it's kinda important (and valuable info for all of us, really ? )

@havikApr 30.2003 — I tested it on NS6, the page loaded quickly yet it lagged a bit when clicking the links. Also, the page needed to be refreshed when I closed the window and tried to reopen it.

Anything else? ?

@khalidali63Apr 30.2003 — I tested it on both Mozilla1.3 and IE6..

Results are the same for Moz1.3 as adam listed..for IE though,it breaks as soon as I click on a link to change the color red or green etc, a new window opens up taking up the default window size on th escreen with red green buttons on it and the colors in the modal win do not change.

@JonaApr 30.2003 — IE6 opens the same speed both times for me. The links, as Adam said, behave weirdly, other than that, the .asp page takes a while to load. Perhaps that's just because the server (?).

Nope...

that's cool ?

(unless you got some more suggestions for tunes. ? The best of the last bunch was Thousand Foot Krutch).

Hey Khalid...

it crapped-out in your version of IE6? :eek:

for real?

can you tell me what you are running?

i need to know why your IE6 is handling it differently from Jona's and cyberade.

and you are probably correct Jona...

the server is probably slow sweetie (but i can't complain about it cause i get to use it for free :rolleyes: ).

ANY IE5's out there?!!!

Another v6 to determine trends?

Anyone at all?

thank you :rolleyes:

I get the exact same results as Khalid in IE6

@ShampieApr 30.2003 — ditto, however is it intended it opens a new window when I click on a color?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@khakiauthorApr 30.2003 — oh cr*p!

that's not good at all ?

once is an instance...

twice is a coincidence...

thrice is a trend

(bwah-bwah-bwah!!!) :rolleyes:

suddenly IE6 is becoming as annoying as Netscape used to be back in the day.

ModalDialogs are a Microsoft creation!

and they just took away some creative functionality with the release of IE6!

and now I can barely stand to look at the lifesize portrait of Bill Gates that hangs on my wall now ( ? ).

ugh...

ok... good feedback.

thanks guys ? and ?

@AdamGundryApr 30.2003 — Now you see why everyone should use PHP and Mozilla. ?

I get the same on IE6.

@AdamBrillApr 30.2003 — Unfortunately, I got the same results as Pyro and Khalid... That's too bad because it would be pretty cool if it would work better... ?

@khalidali63Apr 30.2003 — Gggggggoood ...I am sorry K,its so darn hard to resist this oportunity of MSN bashing...?

Oh People,Listen to me.

As I have always been saying, all along our grown up lives,drop MSN and grab Open source..

there ...now I am feeling better..

@khakiauthorApr 30.2003 — drop MSN and grab Open source..
your gonna hafta convince BIG BUSINESS (and especially Corporate America!) if that is ever going to happen.

The stats are still leaning heavily towards MS... so that's what we will all still need to design and develop for.

(and i really am mad/sad that IE6 has crapped-out a previously creative and workable ModalDialog solution option :mad: / ? )

thanks for all of the great feedback guys!!!?!!!
