get info from mysql

I have the following script.
The table contains user, password and status.
I want to get the status (from the mysql) of the user that logs in to be put into a variable.
Could someone explain how to do this?
$user = $_POST[‘username’];
$password = $_POST[‘password’];
$query = “SELECT * FROM `users` WHERE `user` = ‘$user’ AND `password` = PASSWORD(‘$password’)”;
$result = mysql_query($query) or die(mysql_error());
if(mysql_num_rows($result) == 1){
