how to create a multiline string?

i know it may be a trivial question, but here is the problem
i tried
<?php
echo “hello n world”;
?>
but it prints hello world (one line)
i replaced n with nr and rn and “chr(10).chr(13)” and “chr(13).chr(10)”
and nothing changed!
i tried
<?php
$string = <<<TEST
string 1
string
TEST;
?>
but it reported error!
i use Appserv appserv-win32-2.4.4a.exe
i hope anyone can help!!!
