Simple txt formatting for users in text areas like this one

I love this.

that users can insert tags that create formatted results.

I want to plug this into my site where i have some forms that actually create pages.

How is it done.

I am guessing that at end the code is passed through a function that parses it replaces simple format tags with actual html tags buta m stuck on how to get the buttons to pass the tags into here. is there script available somewhere or a tutorial i can look at to help me.
