@ShrineDesignsNov 06.2005 — you are replacing the result (which mysql_fetch_array() needs in order to get data from mysql) from mysql_query() with the value returned from mysql_num_rows()

try
// ...
$result = mysql_query("SELECT email FROM users WHERE email = '$email'");
$row_count = mysql_num_rows($result);
// ...
Success!
