Getting innerhtml content

Here is my problem. I need to set a cookie’s value to the content of a layer.

So far i have
<script language=”javascript” src=”main.js”></script>
<script language=”javascript”>

var layerid = document.getElementById(‘Layer1’)

var pagename = layerid.innerhtml

function pagenamecookie() {
setCookie(‘pagename’, pagename)
}

function alertCookie() {
alert(getCookie(‘pagename’))
}

</script>
</head>
<body onLoad=”javascript: pagenamecookie();”>
<div id=”Layer1″>htm_.html</div><br><br><br><br><br>
<a href=”#” onClick=’javascript:alertCookie();’>stuff</a>

</body>
I can’t seem to get the innerhtml content of Layer1.

Any advice?

var pagename = layerid.innerHTML;
