Parsing visible controls on web pages

Hi,
I’m looking at parsing a html page for controls such as standard buttons and drop-down list boxes. However, elements such as frames are not detected. Conversly, other tags that are not controls and are not visible are detected as controls creating noise in the detection.

I heard that there is a visible property or something alike in javascript for form controls. Another alternative may be to create a shema for mapping of tag/control types. Anyone any idea experience with this kind of problem?
Thanks
