new at web development

Hello all

I am new at web development (just started learning HTML on my own).
I have been a C++ programmer earlier but now considering switching to
web development. I would appreciate it if anyone of you could
help me by answering these basic(non technical) questions:

Is HTML a prereq for XML?
How is the job market for web developers(especially in and around san diego)?
What all technologies does one have to be familiar with to be able to
be a successful web developer and that are in demand in the job market?

Thanks in advance

No. They are two totally seperate things. Starting by learning a simple markup language like HTML might make learning something more complex like XML a bit easier, but only in so far as it will give you a rudimentary understanding of markup.

Haven't a clue.

Well I'd say the bare essentials are HTML, CSS and Javascript. Though I doubt you'll get far without a pretty good understanding of a server side language and basic server management skills. Apparently the ability to program in Java is a pretty high demand skill, but I wouldn't class that as a web development skill. I'd say that's a much more general skill.

@2fast4yaOct 19.2005 — I think after html, learning PHP would also be good for you if your trying to be hired as a web developer. My older brother has a very successful web design company, and i know the people he hires know the following:

HTML

Photoshop

PHP

Flash

As far as I know, those are the main ones he requires people to have full knowledge of doing. Building and managing databases, design complex graphics, and creating full on ecommerce websites.

I hope this helped.
