editing a website template

i just got a template and it contains two folders (HTML and PSD), in the PSD folder, there’s a .psd file that lets me edit the template and let me add to it. in the HTML folder, there’s a file called index.html which lets me preview the template and style.css which i dont know what it is. Also there’s a “image” folder, inside the “html folder” which has cutted images. my question is how do i edit the PSD file and cut it just like how they did it?

If you are happy with the images they provided you can skip this and just edit the index.html file in your favorite editor such as FrontPage, DreamWeaver or even Notepad if you are comfortable with html.

If you hate their images then just replace them with your own...change the filename.gif/jpg with whatever pics you want to use and put those pics in the image folder. You'll see in the index file how it calls for those images from that folder.

It is important that you keep the directory structure as-is...i.e. don't place images in some other folder unless you plan to change the code to call from those folders.

The style.css is a style sheet that the index.html calls and it tells the webpage what fonts/rules etc to use when presenting itself in a browser. You need this file in order for the index.html to look as the designer intended. If you ditch it the page will come up wonky with default fonts/colors/links. It is also the preferred method of defining the style of all of your pages.
