Call a script on a remote server

Hi,

Anyone familiar with phpBB forums ?
I linked my site to some external forums. basically I am calling a PHP script there that gives me back a javascript and displays the info I need from the forum. When the forum server is up and running, no problem it works like a charm, when the forum server is down, it frezes my whole site.
is ther ea way to test the connection to the forum and make sure it is working before calling the script ?
