This forum is going really, really nice

Hehe,

i used to come to these forums quite a lot even if not posting much, to see what other users were having trouble with and i identified with this place, but when i post a topic here asking for help or tips in CHOOSING an EXISTING formmail replacement and i get what i call ‘SMART’ post telling me to write my own AFTER I SAID I DON’T HAVE ENOUGH SECURITY KNOWLEDGE TO DO THAT MYSELF, After stating i was having problems with my host on that account and i needed a FULLY WORKING REPLACEMENT. Then i get attacked for posting back saying it was a stupid post. And even more closing down the thread.

I ask for help in choosing something because and i repeat i have not enough knowledge to do so myself and the answer that everybody seems to believe positive is ‘write your own’ with a link to the php documentation manual on mail() function… now sorry again, but if this isn’t making fun of someone in need, then i really don’t know what it is.

Hope other users that need help will find these forums a bit more helpful, understanding and serious than i found out them to be.

@NogDogOct 02.2005 — Yes, I closed down the other thread because it was turning into a useless flame war.

Now try going back to that thread after calming your emotions (if possible). Read your initial post. Then read Sheldon's. At this point you may feel that his post did nothing to help, but I see no sign of malice in his reply: just possible misunderstanding of your situation and perhaps the "horrible" sin of replying without spending a lot of time thinking about it. Then read your reply to him, in which you refer to his "idiotic response" and "dead brain cells".

At this point, do you truly expect anyone here -- all of whom participate on their own free time for no other purpose than to learn and to help others learn -- to want to risk helping you and suffering similar wrath should they happen to not supply an answer you like?

Let's all of us try checking our attitudes at the door before participating here. Try not to assume the worst of anybody, and practice all those old truisms our parents tried to teach us:

  • [*]Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

  • [*]If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything.

  • [*]Before posting on any forum, re-read what you typed and try to think how other people who aren't inside your head will interpret it before you post, and consider whether it's even worth posting in the first place.*

  • * OK, so our parents didn't try to teach us this one, but it's still a good idea. (I spent a lot of time and 3 major re-writes of this post before I clicked the submit button, in the hopes that this will be read in the constructive manner I intended and not as an insult and flame -- I hope I succeeded at least a little bit.)

    @MayaPTauthorOct 02.2005 — Ok,

    I just wanted you guys to know i admit i was out of line, there was no need for me to be as rude as i was (even though the answers were not any more polite). I have sent Sheldon a private message in which i apologize for being offensive since it's not one of my rights to insult anyone here. I still think, even after re-reading my post several times, that his answer was not productive by any means and i feel sorry that i might have expressed myself because from some of the answers in that thread it seems people were thinking i wanted them to send/give me their work. This was not the case, i just needed/wanted/asked, or at least that was my intention, for people to comment on products they have tried/used just as simple as that. Anyway, people have the right to answer with what they believe and i'm sorry to have insulted/hurt anyone because that is not correct behavior, specially for someone asking for help.

    Cheers,

    MayaPT

    @Stephen_PhilbinOct 03.2005 — Well if you feel that someone has made an inappropriate post, then you can easily report it and it will be looked into pretty quickly.

    With regards to people pointing to learning resources as opposed to just spoon-feeding you scripts on demand, well that's just how it is. Personally I think it's the best way of helping people and on top of that, there are very few people that actually have time to write out a script for every single post they come accross on this forum. I know I don't have that kind of time. If we can help people to help themselves then they'll need help from others less often. It lowers the amount of help people need (which is good for us) and it lets them be able to get on with their work without relying on help as often. If people think you are unwilling to help yourself, then it's very unlikely they're going to spend their time helping you either.

    @MayaPTauthorOct 03.2005 — It seems i can't explain to no one that all i wanted was comments on already existing solutions i didn't want by any means and i wasn't expecting AT ALL for anyone to send me their job. I don't understand why everyone is thinking that, maybe that's common practice in several forums and by several people but was not what i wanted. I am sorry to realize that was the message tha came through from my post. I guess i really made a mistake i shouldn't have posted asking for comments on 'freely available fully working solution' in a developers forum, so once again my bad. But please everyone understand that i was not asking anyone here to develop for me, i might have been a bit aggressive but i am not that selfish.

    Cheers,

    @SheldonOct 03.2005 — I felt at the time the suggestions that i had made would be helpfull. If MayaPT had gone to the page i posted a like for she would see working example scripts to replace her formail script. I was recomending that page becasue i know the code on it works. I admit i was a bit harsh in my second response, but was a bit Shocked at the response to my first peice of help(Not to mention the amount of beer in my gut). I did look at what i said and though it was good, rather than posting my code to send an email that you wouldnt understand and or no which lines to edit, otherwise i would get your mail.

    I agree with Stephen, pointing to resources is the best way to learn. I mean getting code from someone helps yes, but what if you want to change something, you would not know where to start?

    Thanks NogDog, I had finished my paddy and now im sober i think what i replied with was way over the top and thanks for the auto ****** on this forum becasue what i replied with was not for the younger ones to see.

    What i have learned from this is....

    in no order

    -Read, Think, then read it again.

    -Post nice and be nice, then people will do the same in return.

    -Point to resourcese with posting code, then they have the code and can learn how it works.

    -Dont drink so much, man i almost fell over again

    -People help for free, dont abuse that fact.

    -No hard feelings!

    @SheldonOct 03.2005 — MayaPT Did you end up finding the code you wanted, I feel some sort of obligation to help you with this now.

    @MayaPTauthorOct 03.2005 — Sheldon,

    For starters here are my public apologies to you, sorry for being so rude.

    About that problem, i ended up getting banned on a host because i was being used as a spam relay node through formmail. Now i'm on other host and am using nms formmail since it was the one that i found had more positive reviews around several forums.

    Just to clarify things a bit, i know how to code (not really an experienced programmer but...) in PHP as in some other languages, my whole problem with the situation was not fully understanding how to actually secure the e-mail processing. I use mail() in a lot of my other scripts, but in those it's me who actually builds the whole email so i don't need to be so extreme about security measures.

    This being said, if there's still some will to help me then maybe simply talking about your experience, or even lack of it, with secure e-mail forms or so would be nice at this time. Thanks again for your availability and sorry once again.

    Cheers,

    MayaPT

    @SheldonOct 03.2005 — Well as i understand it, the only way to make an email script as secure as it can be is by using if, elseif and else.

    Checking that all the variables have been passed, check the page referrer, to make sure that the right page has sent the data.

    Other than that i cant think of anything else to offer.

    @LimpBagelOct 03.2005 — If you want a secure form mail script, an employee of my webhost has one in their forums, I can send it to you.

    I don't use it but the code looks pretty good and a lot of the users there swear by it.

    @MayaPTauthorOct 04.2005 — Hi LimpBagel,

    As i had stated i was not looking or expecting for people to send me their materials or so, but of course i'm not dumb to pass on the opportunity to see how some other person tackled the secure email form issue. So if your offer is still on i'll gladly take the code, if not for using i certainly could at least look at the code.

    Cheers,

    MayaPT
