get number of a link clicked

I add a link on html page, the link is for download – when user clicks the link, download starts.

I have a counter on the page, which is for counting the number of visitors.

now I want to record how many visitors have clicked the download link.

is it possible to do that by html code?

if yes, please give me link or comments of code samples.
if not, which language is easier to implement that? php?

@felgallSep 26.2005 — No. You will need some sort of server side script for that. I have one I wrote using in PHP/mySQL at http://www.felgall.com/php11.htm
