@the_treeSep 25.2005 — #If you use a small proportion of a song, a taster, then you are just doing the musical equlivent to paraphrasing wich so long as you don't claim the work to be your own then you aren't doing anything horibly illigeal, or at least nothing that anyone is going to waste time over prosecuting. If you use more than just a taster or don't properly account the tracks to the record companies in question then you are breaking the law, yes.
Note: This really has nothing to do with markup, please post in appropriate boards in future.
@Daniel_TSep 25.2005 — #Gosh, can anybody here spell? I-L-L-E-G-A-L, and L-E-G-A-L ?
Anyways, I think you still have to get permission from the record company to use even a small snippet, but like Paul said, no one's going to worry about taking such a small legal infraction to court (that still doesn't make it right, kiddies :p)
@ray326Sep 26.2005 — #I don't think the RIAA/MPAA have sufficiently bought enough US politicians yet to eliminate "fair use" from the copyright law but they will soon.
@the_treeSep 26.2005 — #The legalities fairy will eat your brains. You can never actually tell wether record companies will prosecute, but they would definately be in a position to.
@NogDogSep 26.2005 — #Best advice I can give is to either (a) don't take the risk and just remove questionable material from your site, (b) request permission from the copyright owner to put the material on your site, and/or (c) contact a lawyer who works in the field of copyrights for solid legal advice. Any opinions stated here by non-lawyers will protect you from lawsuit about as much as your lucky rabbit's foot will.
