SSL Certificates?

I want to setup an ecommerce website.
I’ve been dabbling with osCommerce.

I’ve been told by someone that I need SSL??
I’ve asked my hosting company.
They’ve told me that I need to buy one from a company??
What’s involved? Where do I buy from?

(Apologise… I had no idea where to post this message… I always seem to get answers on this forum… so I thought I’d ask.)

For example go to the sign in page on googles gmail and you can see (with some tinkering) the certificate issuers details along with the type of encryption, use-by-date, use-after-date, signature, public key etc. that [B]

This is a certification authority trusted by browsers and therefore consumers, that issues a digital certificate containing public/private key combinations to work on server-client relationships deeming the current website to be secure, which a user can see, giving him/her more reason to trust the encryption of the site to handle especially personal information.
