@pyroApr 15.2003 — I use a PC as well. I would think it would be quite necessary to be able to test in Windows IE...

@poabApr 15.2003 — Annoyingly I use a mac to build and upload and then a pc to test everything. Once I'm finished I test on both.

I feel that the pc is definitely more important in terms of the number of users, it also has one major problem. I begin a design from the type scheme, which then largely dictates the options open to me regarding the rest of the design. PCs simply don't display text correctly, and so I test on pc as it's the lowest standard available.

I work on a mac primarily because I prefer the interface, and find the software generally superior. If I'm doing it all day, I want to work with a machine that I enjoy.

cheers.

@DariaApr 15.2003 — I have a feeling there is going to be plenty of controversy in this thread....

I use PC.

I wish I had a Mac, too, in addition to PC. I used it for publishing waaay back (when Classic LC II was a BIG deal!) and remember that it was superior to PC in that type of applications from experience.

poab brought up a good point here - to develop on Mac (easier for you) for the PC-oriented world (easy for them)...

Maximus, are your writing a research paper? ?

Just like asking question to get a feel for the community.

I have never used a MAC... Ben using PC since around 96... so not very long in the grand scheme of things... long enough to see several versions of Windows though...

I've never really had any interest in even learning a MAC. I figure the day I know EVERYTHING aout a PC might be the day I'll be bored enough to take on another one... but that day will never come.

And yes... I agree.... this thread has a lot of potential for controversy... I guess in a way I am the devil's advocate here...

I think PCs will always dominate the market (well...at least for the forseeable future), because of the amount of people who start with one. The cheapest pcs are cheaper than the cheapest Macs. Most people buy cheap to start out (like that first machine you got when you were 14) and people tend to stick with their first choice as they don't want to learn a new operating system. Fair enough.

That said, if you work in a certain industry then you're likely to be on a mac. Most business can afford macs, and many do use them for their simplicity and maleability. If you were developing a website for a newspaper for example, your client would be using mostly macs (at least in Scotland I haven't checked elsewhere).

I don't think you need to buy a mac. but if you want to make web sites you have to at least test on both because macs aren't that small a minority and the difference between platforms can be vast.

cheers.
