Regarding Domains and IPs

This is going to be rather long so please bear with me.

  • 1.

I am running windows XP and I’m using AnalogX Simple server to ‘host’. The files are on my computer and all I do is direct the program to the root directory and it’s supposed to publish it on the web as http://149.21.3.103. The problem is it only publishes on my LAN network. How do I make this to where everyone can see it by typing in http://149.21.3.103? I’ve already set my router to open all ports, but everyone says they still cannot access my page.

I bought a domain (www.guildnotguilty.com) from www.dynonames.com. But as stated above, I don’t use a third party to host my site. I don’t know how to assosiate my (not working IP) to the domain.

  • I probably need to resolve problem number one before I work on number two… what can you guys tell me to help out?

@mdoignySep 10.2005 — Do you have a fixed ip? That's a nice thing, it will make things easy for you. (no dynamic updates)

I think the problem resides with your router. A router is needed to connect two subnets (the internet and your local network).

You must tell the router that it must deliver all internet requests to the server PC. The easiest way is to put the server in DMZ (demilitarised zone) ---i hope you applied all the windows patches since this will make your server in direct connection to tghe internet --- Disable any windows file sharing of the server.

You can check your internet connectivity:

    http://afr_upd.verfaillie.be:20800/cgi-bin/gap?149.21.3.103 and

    http://web.verfaillie.com/cgi-bin/gap?149.21.3.103

Both servers will try to connect to your server and show you the results. It's as if you asked your neighbourg to connect to your server.

Next you'll need a DNS provider to translate the IP into a domain name, but that's stuff for later (i'm using http://freedns.afraid.org where i'm one of the board moderators, so i can help you further ?
