program for writing PHP

Hello! I have a problem. My dreamweaver trial should run out soon. And instead of spending more money, i found out that you can write it out in notepad. So I will. But one problem. It won’t display the PHP scripts i write down until i upload it into my site. Can anyone help me? I need to know what it looks like before I send it up but it only shows me the HTML. Even when i change the extension from .php to .html. Can anyone help me, it’s driving me nuts!?

@SheldonSep 05.2005 — install a php enabled web server on your home computer, then you can edit in notpad and veiw as normal with firefox.

Download appserv if you run windows. it is an easy to use install and will set up everything you need.

@aznchong91Sep 05.2005 — You could also just uninstall and then reinstall dreamweaver, you know. That way, the count restarts. (I have never tried it, but it should work)

@bathurst_guySep 05.2005 — not that dreamweaver makes your web sites better just cause your using it, you can make a web site just as good using notepad

Exactly. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that far more of the sites that have had their entire databases deleted or otherwise cracked just by the wrong input given in a login form, were built using a visual editor rather than carefully being built by hand.

@NogDogSep 06.2005 — HTML-Kit has context-sensitive text colors for PHP (as well as for the HTML outside of your <?php ?> tags). There are also a number of PHP-related plug-ins you can install. And it's free (one of the main reasons I use it ? ).

@JohnWeatherbySep 06.2005 — Dev-PHP is an open source editor with preview and syntax highlighting for PHP, HTML, CSS, XML, Javascript and SQL.

@rch10007Sep 06.2005 — Anyone care to comment on significant differences between HTML-Kit and Dev-PHP, I have downloaded them both and Dev-PHP seems simplier to use but does that mean that HTML-Kit has a bunch of useless functions?

To think - I've been using notepad this whole time - I should be able to cut down on debugging time by useful color coded code!

@NogDogSep 06.2005 — HTML-Kit is first and foremost a HTML editor, so it comes with a lot of stuff for support of [X]HTML markup and such. I'm not really familiar with Dev-PHP, but I just downloaded it to give it a quick look-see. My first impression is that it does not have as much depth to its syntax highlighting as does HTML-Kit. For instance, these two lines would look the same in Dev-PHP, but have different highlighting for the function name in HTML-Kit (due to mysql_query() being a pre-defined function in PHP):
<i>
</i>mysql_query($query);
my_sql_function($query):

Other than that, I don't have enough information to say if either outshines the other in other respects. For now I'm pretty sure I'll stick with HTML-Kit because I'm used to it. ?
