@bokehAug 26.2005 — The only way you can install server software is if you own the server.

@bokehAug 26.2005 — Not many things in this world are free, and you get what you pay for. All the services that claim to be free are not. They just take advantage of people that are to mean to pay for their webhosting by plastering adverts and pop-ups all over their webpages and certainly do not allow dynamic pages or database access let alone with the latest software.

@gameguy43Aug 26.2005 — i used 100webspace.com fora while, free small hosting with some space, custom URLs, and best of all PHP support. small ad bar at the top of the page. the email support is a joke though, they advertise it but you cant even send emails via php, theyre paranoid about spamming. anyhu, you cant install stuff on it, but its good if u wanna screw around with php for a bit before you invest. just be sureyou REALLY check out your host before you invest, i went for an awesome deal of 20 a year forall i needed and it was a joke, the server doesnt even really work.

@bokehAug 26.2005 — Have you got ADSL? If so just run your site off your local machine. Then you will be able to run any software you choose and all you will need to pay is the electric bill. I even know someone who is running their site from a PDA.

@SheldonAug 27.2005 — only if you have a static ip address for any hosting other than testing would work from running off your own computer.

But is a very good idea to develop on

@bokehAug 27.2005 — only if you have a static ip address for any hosting other than testing would work from running off your own computer.
Sheldon that is not true. You can run a webserver from a dynamic IP and use one of the many free dynamic DNS services. Anyway even without dynamic DNS it can still work. With most 'nailed up' ADSL connections the IP can remain unchanged for months. Here is an example of a dynamic IP serving content. BTW: that file is served by PHP. Notice how it is the default file in the directory even though it is an MPEG.

@Stephen_PhilbinAug 27.2005 — Well you don't need ADSL, you don't need a static IP and in fact, you don't even need an internet connection. If you're just testing and learning, then you can just do it on http://localhost/ or any number of IP addresses that resolve to your own machine. I have a webserver open to the public on a dynamic address without any of that spyware crap. I just leave Gaim running.

Success!
