Replace text in an iframe???

i have a rich text box and i want to use the insert hyperlink feature in firefox. ive looked at so much information on range and selection that im so confused now. i can return the selection and even return the starting and end positions of the selection, but i dont know how to use these values to edit the selection itself. on top of that, the editing of the selection is being done in a pop-up window, so im using window.opener to get all the information from the iframe. i’ve seen this feature implemented on a number of sites that work in firefox, but most of them seem to use a textarea element and use its value to edit. i dont believe there is an equivalent to a textarea value attribute in an iframe is there?
